Description

Júlia Ramalho is, certainly, one of the most popular Portuguese artists, and her work is easily identified by the use of glazed clay in honey tones. Born in 1946 in the parish of Galegos, Barcelos, Júlia is the granddaughter of the well-known ceramist Rosa Ramalho, having learned with her, even before the age of 10, how to make clay figures. In her work, the continuation of her grandmother’s work is visible – namely in the Christs, “sarroncos” or bigheads – to which some pieces of her own creation were added.

Her clay pieces are an expression of an ancestral heritage where popular traditions and creative impetus come together. All pieces bear her “JR” signature.

Júlia Ramalho stopped making more pieces due to illness, and her son António Ramalho has continued with the family tradition.
